Thanks for watching this episode of The Family Couch!
In this episode of The Family Couch, parent coach Rachel Sklar we discuss the intricacies on how to survive the preschool years and the importance of motivating children from the start. She and I chat about how as a parent there is no “right or wrong answers” except those that are made when you feel confident and empowered.
Rachel digs into why it is so imperative that we leverage our relationship with our kids and utilize their strengths in our conversations. She shows us that doing this allows your children to feel relaxed, safe, and finally comfortable enough to cooperate in almost any situation. Through our discussion Rachel gives specific examples of leveraging your relationships so you can begin practicing implementation immediately. A key topic is examined – as parents, we will find success with this technique when we value our relationship with our children over being right.
We discuss how convincing language negatively impacts your conversation (ie. telling your preschool what to do all the time) and how getting upset with misbehavior may not be the best response. Rachel shares how taking the time to stop and recognize that your toddlers mindset may not be in the right place, and coming back after they have calmed down can create a learning environment that saves you time in the long run.
We candidly look at the parent response in these hard moments – how to manage yourself as a parent when your preschooler is not acting the way you want. She explains that it is a fight or flight response at times. Realizing that you are no different than your children is the first step to making a change. It is on us to help your child and for us, you have to come down first.
Lastly, we dive into the impact of a physical connection parents can have with a preschooler and how that creates action. Rachel shows us how this teaches mindfulness to children at an early age and solidifies a secure relationship between parent and child. This opens the doors to communication for years from now, creating a foundation through the teenage years and into adulthood. I am excited to hear your thoughts – it was a great discussion!
