Episode 8: Empowering Moms to Find Strength in Change

Thanks for watching this episode of The Family Couch

In this episode of The Family Couch with Gesa Harmston, Certified Life Coach, we discuss the importance of mothers empowering themselves to focus on their personal needs. Gesa shares techniques on how she works with moms to quiet the noise around them and listen to their personal needs and why it is important for them recognize when they need to slow down and take time for themselves.

We dig into how this phenomenon of “rushed motherhood” starts the moment a female announces she is pregnant. From friends and family asking if you will find out the gender before birth to whether you will breastfeed, everyone has an opinion. Unfortunately, the impact is that mothers begin their journey doubting their ability before the baby is even born.

Gesa goes further into this journey, sharing that as your child grows, the struggle may become even more intense. We talk about how where mothers where once everything to a child (food source and security) eventually, she must let go and begin to give independence. This tumultuous experience can be heartbreaking but is a time where mothers can introduce compassionate communication, a practice that will benefit her for years to come.

Compassionate communication, the concept of being nice to yourself and taking judgement out of the equation in how you speak to yourself is a technique that we discuss as an option for mothers who are working to listen to their own needs. Gesa shares how difficult it can be initially, but gives step-by-step instructions on how to do so to begin this important journey.

Lastly, we discuss all of the things that you navigate when you become a mother and how overwhelming it can feel. Gesa shares how we need to focus on the importance of asking for help but also knowing how to receive it. It is a skill that may not be known, but can be learned after practice. It is a combination of what a woman has internally and also what a woman can pull from externally: a tribe of resources, actions you take, the food you eat, etc.
